Osteoporosis is defined as a generalized decrease in bone mass (osteopenia) that affects bone matrix and mineral content equally, giving rise to fractures of vertebral bodies with bone pain, kyphosis, and shortening of the torso. Fractures of the hip and the distal radius are also common.
The drug effect may, however, become unmasked at daytime when other sedating substances (e. g. , ethanol) are ingested and the patient shows an unusually pronounced response due to a synergistic interaction (impaired ability to concentrate or react).

 

This effect is mediated by D1 receptors and is utilized in the treatment of cardiovascular shock and hypertensive emergencies by infusion of dopamine and fenoldopam, respectively. At higher doses, ?1-adrenoceptors and, finally, ?-receptors are activated, as evidenced by cardiac stimulation and vasoconstriction, respectively.
